Dont' be too "careful" when you act!

Breathe. 7/27/2010. Ok, so this is my first time blogging. I love to talk to my actors in class so this will be interesting.

Class was good today. I feel that Tuesday has really come together as a group. Funny how you can have more energy etc but the work is always solid even with our new additions.

Many of you today were either coming or leaving from auditions so I don't think everyone was able to share one another's work. Pity. Jack, David and Joey really brought out such different things in the Travis sides. I cannot wait for callbacks next week.

I see so many things when actors work in front of the camera, but I was really struck today by how we cannot be timid about what it is we go for in a scene. Hitting things too much on the nose without any exploration just kills spontaneity. What I want actors to know is your instincts are so much better than you give them credit for! Leap. All the way. Especially in class. Careful holds back too much of what we bring to the party.

Careful doesn't deliver a booking.

Elizabeth, so great to have you back from NYC. I miss you when you aren't in class. She had so much going on today and wasn't using it. Not completely. It is so easy to watch someone and see how close they are to delivering. Make sure you don't energetically drop out when you are being directed. Trust. Pay attention to the moments that are not spoken. The rest was really right on.

Natalie, loved what you found for the feature you are reading for. Goes to show you the risks we can take if we only give ourselves PERMISSION. Make sure you don't wait for the text to give you permission to create the moment. You became so sexy. The post coital stuff had a lot to work with. Pay attention to how the breath can help you live that out more fully in the moment. Take risks. Playing at sexual content and really being there are two entirely different things.

Katie, every time you get up to work I am excited. Don't fight with what you need to bring a scene to life for yourself. You can stand to really go for some stuff. Get it out and then let that intensity come forward and do very little. You transformed as you went through the work.

It was great to work with Viktor. Being aware of the camera and just getting behind your lines really changed up what you bring to the picture. We all bring different levels of experience to a role and when you incorporated being a father the character really materialized.

What I will challenge everyone with for the next week is the choice. Do you grow beyond where you were this week? Take your experience and push the process forward? Too many actors drop the ball when they need to go through something. DON'T.

On a personal note, I suppose I will get better at blogging as this goes along.

Jen
