The Truth

Building a performance from the core requires we really speak from the heart.

If we are trying on camera instead of really living in the moment we spend all of our energy justifying where we are coming from. The moment we address things honestly all the bullshit falls away and the moment truly begins to speak for itself.

We learn how to reveal in our work by going there take after take, week after week. At the end of the day only the actor knows if he/she is telling the truth.

I was so impressed with Sean and Katie in their scene. They really set the tone for class last night and where previously they may have been conflicted about letting things fly, in "The End" they really allowed themselves to own the end of a marriage where there had previously been so much love. Sean your impulse to begin the scene with an embrace really colored the whole relationship for me. It was such a beautiful moment for you both and Katie you didn't think... you just went there. You fell into the turmoil of this woman's life. Congrats. Raw. Gritty. You both should be proud.

Luis and Hilary. Chemistry is such an elusive necessity when we act. I was really drawn in to this relationship and where it would be going. Hilary you are such an honest, open woman. I hope you really take to heart the things your partners get from you week after week. Luis, you are fabulous on screen. I don't think you have to work so hard for the obvious things. For me the complexities at the end of the scene were so much more interesting. I saw more of a man than a boy and a hint of a dark side coming thru. It was a nice journey considering how happy you were at the beginning of the exercise/scene.

J Todd and Elizabeth. Playing Nice is really graphic and I do think we will try not to really go to that type of violence when we work. We were hesitating to really connect in the exercise and I would say go for it there. Right or wrong dare to invest in one another before we launch into the scene. It will safeguard you both from playing the idea of something. That said, Elizabeth such a minor adjustment opened you up so beautifully. You were really there. I hope you really study this dvd. Sometimes you are in it and sometimes you are not and last night you really allowed yourself to go there. I saw the horror through your reactions to J Todd when you were open to him even though you knew on some level it would be painful to do so. Switching the roles last minute was just a bonus and I have to say you make a great serial killer. J Todd. Trust. Confront. Listen and engage. It was good to see you feeling your way through something.

Serita and Caroline. Sometimes work speaks for itself. I can say that you guys fulfilled the scene in every way. The complexities of maternity and the fear of being a young unwed mother.
These roles can be cliche or they can be human and the truth took you there immediately. I was impressed with your boldness. You must have that if you want to act. It was a stark difference once you let each other in. It will not always be easy but on camera...we must.

Tell the Truth Guys...you will realize it frees you

See you next week.
