Pushing the Boundaries

Breathe.

When we are constantly auditioning and/or focusing on getting the part it is easy to run right through a scene looking for an end result. The experience can leave us feeling a bit numb and disconnected. When that happens I have noticed actors very often begin to play it safe and pull inward and at times shut down. At worst the actor feels stuck and the scene falls flat, at best we give a version of our tool box not an authentic read.

I bring this to our attention this week to remind everyone to take risks when they are studying (to be honest it is important to take risks when you work and audition as well). You already know what you do well. It is important to expand your vocabulary as an actor. It is mandatory to really work your talent out! It is so easy to settle.
"Yeah, it was alright. "
"Oh, I didn't care for the role."
"Well, I wouldn't do that on a set, in an audition, in the real world."
All excuses to not really go on the ride. And we learn where we need to go by setting out on the journey. Every time you work. It must be your constant habit.

David, you took some real risks in living out very violent and technically demanding sides. How do we live out an interrogation scene that borders on torture when we have a female reader not giving us anything? The attempt to directly answer these questions in front of the lens is a work out. You were way out of your head. Don't be in such a rush to wrap it all up. I think you earned the aftermath of everything you did. It is important to give your audition a strong ending. Good work!

Jason, I honestly felt your work in class is what often actors bring into an audition. You nailed scene one. I was like, "Damn, that was great!" and eagerly awaited number two and three. I would say the acting was there, but the experience not as fully lived out as possible. When we got you up and acted it out...BAM! you dropped all the way in. Be aware that not all of you scenes have the same emotional intensity and drive. Understanding how to take some physical risks will help you knock all three out of the ball park. Permission to be as good as you get. It was a good work out. Please watch your dvd.

For the ladies reading for Liz...I think we can go sooooooooooooooooooo much further with her. Ask yourselves if you are having a riot. If not you need to bring more to this dynamo of a character.

Amy's simple comedic scene. The question becomes what is going to make network pick you. How can we stand apart from everyone else. Really bringing the yogurt shop and your character's body language to framing your shot is important. I thought everyone did well. Ask yourselves where the risks are.

Darla's, I would just recommend you play around with the inner life of this girl Watch your dvd's to discover when a shot is really serving you. Allow yourself to feel tension in the body. Shy away from the obvious here. Layers are what we are after.

Callbacks next week. We are going to Cast these roles.
